Job Description

We seek to a hire an Electrical Engineer (EIT)  to work  in our Norfolk, VA office.  This position will be responsible for assisting in the design, engineering, analysis, equipment selection, and system layout of electrical systems for multi-discipline building design projects for commercial and government facilities of moderate to large scope and who will take all steps necessary to obtain full PE licensure. 

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  •  Performing various aspects of electrical engineering design as directed by a Senior Electrical Engineer or Electrical Engineer, including Conceptual Studies, Program Requirements, Design Analysis, Calculations, Equipment selection and layout, and System selection and layout for building design, upgrades, and retrofits
  •  Meeting with clients as directed
  •  Coordinating and communicating with other engineers and design team members to ensure that electrical design details integrate properly with other disciplines represented on the design team
  •  Complying with the firm’s quality control policies and procedures
  •  Learn and implement department and company standards
  •  Develop design and analysis skills
  •  Preparing electrical project programming, schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents.
  •  Providing electrical support services during the bidding process, such as preparing addenda, amendments, and responding to RFI’s
  •  Providing electrical construction phase services including representing the firm on-site, answering RFI’s, reviewing shop drawings and preparing record drawings Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  •  Working with, responding to, and taking direction from Senior Engineers, Project Managers, Managing Principals, Department Directors, and senior management
  •  Working in a multi-discipline design team supervised by senior engineers and project managers on projects of medium to large scope
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  •  Perform Engineer or Senior Engineer tasks as directed
  •  Responsible for document organization and clarity
  •  Responsible for discipline drawing coordination
  •  Assist with preparation of fee proposals for electrical design work as directed
  •  Drafting of marked-up plans, partial plans, sections, details
  •  Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Engineer
  •  Creating schematic-level plans and details for projects of moderate to high complexity
  •  Developing an accurate, three-dimensional model of the structure with the necessary level of detail using the required Building Information Modeling (BIM) software package, when BIM is a project requirement
  •  Develop design options for resolution of system conflicts
  •  Assist with building systems calculations and LEED templates
  •  Participate in building system selections
  •  Participate in building code analysis process
  •  Participate in development of discipline specifications
  •  Adhere to project budget and schedule

Education

Must have graduated from an ABET-accredited 4 or 5-year engineering program in one of the following disciplines:
  •  Electrical Engineering (Building design and power distribution focus)
  •  Electrical Engineering Technology (Building design and power distribution focus)
  •  Architectural Engineering (Electrical Engineering focus)
  •  Architectural Engineering Technology (Electrical Engineering focus)
Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
  •  Must have earned the designation of EI or EIT in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction
  •  Pursuing Professional Engineer licensure (PE) within 36 months of being hired.
  •  Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices and pursuing LEED AP accreditation is desirable
  •  Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to reflect personal growth in the profession and an ever increasing  knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation process
  •  Active membership in IEEE, IES or other related professional organizations is desirable
Software Skills

An Electrical Engineer EIT should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, and information management.

Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable.

Career Experience
  •  Up to 4 years of specific, post-graduation, electrical engineering experience that includes experience with designing building power distribution  systems, lighting system design, communications and security system design, development of construction documents (drawings and  specifications), coordination with other design team members, and experience in responding to construction phase queries and submittals.
  •  Successfully completed at least one student internship in electrical engineering
  •  Experience and a working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards
