Job Description
 
We seek to hire an Energy Specialist to work in our Virginia Beach office who will be responsible for the technical leadership of the project team. This includes the initial planning of the work, coordinating field efforts, ensuring proper system and improvement documentation, providing system operation guidance and insight, and generating ideas for improvement. This position works with engineers, architects, technicians, data collectors and administrative staff to provide enhanced building operation and comfort, reduce energy costs, and develop creative solutions to the problems of building owners and occupants.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
 
  • Conduct ASHRAE Level 1, 2, 3 energy audits.
  • Develop strategies for improving energy efficiency and lowering costs, such as incorporating new energy-saving technology and minimizing unnecessary energy consumption.
  • Conduct building assessments and collect detailed information. 
  • Identify and evaluate energy efficiency measures (Energy Conservation Measure/ECM, Facility Improvement Measure/FIM), calculate the savings potential of measures, and prepare assessment reports. 
  • Develop an accurate energy model of the building systems. 
  • Perform building systems energy calculations and participate in building system selections.
  • Discuss the results of audits in detail with an experienced technical audience. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain favorable background checks and/or security clearance as required by our clients to access their sites/facilities.
 
 
Career Experience
 
  • A minimum of five years of specific experience in a combination of at least two of the following areas: commissioning, retro-commissioning, controls programming/setup/troubleshooting, TAB, energy auditing
  • A minimum of two years of leadership of teams in the above areas of experience.
  • Above experience must include HVAC, lighting, domestic water and/or building automation systems.
 
Education
 
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology (or similar) preferred
  • Formal education and certification in commissioning, retro-commissioning, controls programming/setup/troubleshooting, TAB, energy auditing is highly desired.
     
Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
  • Commissioning – NEBB, AABC, etc.
  • Retro-Commissioning – NEBB, AEE, etc.
  • Energy Auditing/Related – CEM, BEMP, etc.
  • TAB – NEBB, AABC, etc.
  • EIT and/or PE are not required, but may be given additional consideration
 
Software Skills
 
Working familiarity with:
  • Energy Modeling Tools (ie. Trace, HAP, IES, eQuest)
  • Building automation system use and programming experience is preferred
 
Physical Abilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Travel an average of 50% of the time (auto/air/rail)
  • Work may involve times outside standard business hours and/or on weekends
  • Stand, walk, and climb for 8+ hours a day
  • Ability to move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work on roofs, equipment rooms, on ladders, in crawl spaces
 
Other Criteria and Considerations
 
  • Ability to prepare effective, concise, accurate documents and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and to make effective presentations to a variety of groups
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
