Job Description
 
We seek to hire a Field Operations Manager - GIS to work in our Virginia Beach, VA office who will be responsible for training, coordination, management, and supervision of field teams, post processing of GPS Data, QA/QC of land surveys performed by others.  This position reports directly to the Department Director – GIS.
 
General responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
 

  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and photogrammetry
  • Develop and instruct training on GPS field data collection workflows, procedures, techniques and methodology
  • Assist in the development of internal land surveying requirements issued to consultants
  • Assist in the review of land surveying consultants’ fee proposals
  • Manage field team equipment and inventory, including evaluating new equipment and assisting in equipment acquisition
  • Monitor and report field work status
  • Recommend design policies and procedures to improve quality and efficiencies of field work
  • Manage the overall functions of the field teams, including reviewing and approving field work products
  • Coordinate with clients and staff on a daily basis to ensure compliance with field and security protocols.
  • Respond to GPS field work, on-call tasks, and troubleshooting issues, including after-hours support
  • Work with project managers
  • Verify the accuracy of collected data
  • Post process GPS data and export data for internal and external use
  • QA/QC of consultant’s land surveys
  • Assist in marketing and business development efforts
 
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
 
  • Coordinate with land survey consultants for project requirements and submittals
  • Adhere to assigned project budget and schedule
  • Assist in analyzing GPS project requirements
  • Prepare and execute field work and technical plans by coordinating schedules with the project manager for GPS field teams
  • Assist in logistical planning of data collection efforts including, but not limited to, travel and lodging.
  • Assist in the development and enforcement of project-specific safety plans.
  • Monitor field work performance for compliance with project schedule, safety plan, consistent use of field work flow, procedures, and policies daily
  • Evaluate performance of data collection field staff to report to the department director and project manager
  • Process GPS Data daily to provide technical support to data collection teams.
  • Perform QA/QC of collected data
 
Essential Abilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Travel an average of 30% of the time
  • Work may involve times outside of normal working hours and on weekends
  • Work outdoors with varying terrain and all types of weather
  • Stand and walk for 8+ hours a day
  • Be able to lift 30 to 40 pounds
 
Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
  • Be a current licensed Land Surveyor in the Commonwealth of Virginia
 
Software Skills
 
Proficient with Global Positioning System (GPS) GNSS system hardware and software to calibrate, operate, and post process collected data.
 
Proficient in the use of the following software programs:
  • GPS Software (Path Finder Office, MagNet, LGO, TerraSync)
  • GPS Survey Equipment (Leica, Trimble, Topcon, Carlson)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook)
  • Google Earth Professional
  • Autodesk Civil 3D
     
Knowledge of AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and Civil 3D will be given additional consideration.
 
Career Experience
 
A minimum of 10 years of land surveying consulting experience which includes a minimum of 4 years as a licensed land surveyor who managed and supervised survey field crews. 
 
Must possess an understanding of:
  • GIS concepts and functions with advanced knowledge of coordinate systems and conversion requirements
  • Geodatabase schemas and editing procedures, and georeferencing protocols.
