Job Description

We seek to a hire a Plumbing Designer in our Norfolk, VA office who will be responsible for all aspects of plumbing design, including but not limited to domestic water systems, soil waste and vent, storm drainage, compressed air, medical gases, natural gas, non-potable water systems, laboratory process piping systems, and solar water heating systems on multi-discipline building design projects of moderate to large scope.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Performing various plumbing design tasks including Design Analysis, Calculations, Equipment Selection and Layout
• Meeting with clients to prepare proposed scope of work, as directed
• Meeting with project managers and senior engineers to prepare and/or validate proposed scope of work
• Providing oversight and coordination of projects, and working with assigned project managers, to meet client’s budget, contract fees, goals, objectives, and deadlines
• Coordinating and communicating all aspects of plumbing design within multi-disciplinary teams
• Providing input to senior engineer and project manager for project evolution
• Developing project schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents, including CAD
• Providing support services during the bidding process, i.e., preparing addenda and amendments
• Performing services required during the construction phase, i.e., representing the firm on-site, answering RFI’s, reviewing shop drawings, preparing as-builts, etc. as directed
• Ensuring compliance with all quality control policies and procedures and providing QC reviews for other designers
• Working with, responding to, and taking direction from senior engineers and project managers
• Working independently with limited direction


• High School diploma or GED is required

Additional consideration will be given for:

• College level courses in Computer Aided Design, Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Design, or related engineering and technical studies
• Associates degree or Bachelors degree in any of the above subjects strongly preferred

Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations

The ideal candidate will have earned the following licenses, certifications, and accreditations:


Additional consideration will be given to candidates who have the following:

• LEED Accredited Professional or LEED Green Associate
         CSI CDT or CCS
• Professional Engineer licensure or EIT

Software Skills

The ideal candidate will have experience with the following software programs:

• MS Office
• Outlook
• AutoCAD
• Autodesk Revit

Additional consideration will be given to candidates who have experience with the following:

• Navisworks
• Bentley MicroStation
• Bentley BIM
• Bentley BIM MEP

Career Experience

The ideal candidate will have 1-4 years A/E consulting experience as a plumbing designer with exceptional written and verbal communication skills and knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and standards.

Design Project Experience

The ideal candidate will have specific project experience in design of plumbing systems. 1-4 years in plumbing design is strongly preferred with experience in one or more of the following types of design projects:

• Design Build projects
• Commercial facilities
• DOD and Military facilities
• K-12 Schools
• Colleges and Universities
• Hospitals, Medical, or Healthcare facilities
• Heavy Industrial facilities
• Laboratories and Research facilities
• Projects exceeding $20 million in construction value
• LEED certified projects
