Job Description
 
We seek to hire a Lab Planner to work in our Virginia Beach, VA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Washington, DC; or Macon, GA office who will be responsible for performing multiple aspects of laboratory planning services on projects of moderate to large scope for our Federal, Higher Education and Science + Technology markets.
 
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides advanced technical knowledge in the laboratory planning and programming of various-sized pharmaceutical, academic research, biotech, agbiotech, or other emerging technical facilities.
  • Provides technical planning expertise and leadership for laboratory facilities in the areas of programming, design, fit-out planning, equipment planning, MEP systems integration planning, case work specification and construction administration.
  • Participates in user group meetings to collect program needs for laboratory specifications in technical facilities.
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of program requirements and standards.
  • Contributes to the design development and review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions in a collaborative multi-discipline team environment.
  • Assists in developing project scope, plan, and services during the contract process.
  • Assists in establishing overall project budgets and milestone schedules in coordination with project managers, architect and project engineers.
  • Communicates laboratory and equipment planning concepts to project teams, both verbally and through graphic and written reports.
  • Develops architectural drawings and specifications to communicate laboratory and equipment planning concepts for project documentation milestones and construction deliverables.
  • Prepares and modifies laboratory and equipment planning documents, including multi-scale plans, elevations, sections, details, etc.
  • Develops solutions to technical and design problems following established industry standards.
  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with existing and potential clients.
  • Participates in selected marketing and business development opportunities.
  • Incorporates sustainable design solutions into projects as appropriate.
  • Consistently seeks to expand knowledge base in the design and planning of laboratories and associated equipment within technical facilities.
  • Actively participate and potentially lead periodic project meetings and presentations.
  • Participates actively in the firm-wide Science + Technology practice within Clark Nexsen.
  • Assists in the development of standard materials that describe the portfolio, systems, processes and people of the Science + Technology Business Unit.
  • Prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design documents for client and project team review.
  • Actively participates in industry associations to broaden visibility within the profession. 
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or Planning required with laboratory design as main area focus of study preferred.Master’s degree preferred. 
Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
  •  Professional registration preferred.
  • LEED AP preferred.
 
Software Skills
 
A Lab Planner should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs proficiency is MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
 
Must have proficiency in AutoCAD.  Proficiency in Revit preferred.
 
Career Experience
 
Must have 2 years of recent laboratory planning experience with a focus on pharmaceutical, academic research, biotech, agbiotech, or other emerging technical facilities.
 
Other Criteria 
  • Knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for laboratory design.
  • Knowledge of laboratory programming delivery and how design impacts those systems –including space, operational, and equipment programming, as well as MEP systems and casework.
  • Knowledge of laboratory planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction cost control for lab facilities.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and convey laboratory planning needs to designers and other team members.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, multi-discipline team environment.
